This is our Christmas show and the last DSO of 2008. We thought we’d take you sailing instead of the predictable winter outdoor activities you do at Christmas. Back in the fall, Gary went out for an evening of sailboat racing on the St. John River. These are big boats, the kind you find in yacht clubs and the sailors take their racing pretty seriously. But there’s still room for a lot of fun. Join Skipper Danny and his crew of Smitty, Mike and Gary on an almost windless night as they tackle the challenge of light air racing.
We have a Christmas comment from Mike in Illinois and seasonal podsafe music from Dusty Hughes. Email your comments about the show and story ideas to firstname.lastname@example.org.
We’re taking a brief holiday break and will be back with a new show in January. Thanks for listening and downloading over the past year. We wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
We return to Minnesota’s Superior Hiking Trail again this week. Avid hiker Kurt Papke tells us about his relationship with the trail. He’s hiked all 205 miles of the trail in three sections and he’s covered several sections multiple times. He’s also tackled the trail in the winter on snowshoes. He’s written a detailed trip report of a through-hike of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area trail, the “Border Route” with the northernmost section of the SHT to create a 1-week 100 mile wilderness hike. Kurt is also a tester for Backpackgeartest.org. He knows the trail, its history and plans for its future. He’s passionate about the Superior Hiking Trail.
Also on the show we’ll tell you more about the sport of tour skating. It’s big in Sweden and Scandinavia but almost unheard of in North America. And we’ll share a heart warming email with a listener in New Jersey who on a recent vacation in Maine, rediscovered his need for the outdoors in his life.
Podsafe music this week from The Los Dos Bros. Next time on DSO, we’ll go sailboat racing and celebrate Christmas. Contact the show at email@example.com.
Our feature interview today is with a guy who went on a 5 day hike on the Superior Hiking Trail in Minnesota which runs along the north shore of Lake Superior from Two Harbors all the way to the Canadian border. Jason Francis of Stevens Point, Wisconsin hiked about 45 miles of the 205 mile trail by himself. He says it was some of the most beautiful country he’s ever seen. We’ll talk to Jason about his adventure and then next time on DSO we’ll have another interview about the trail, this time with avid hiker Kurt Papke.
On a previous show we spoke with Gord Maddison of Ottawa, Ontario. He’s a high school teacher and outdoor enthusiast. On the same show we read an email from a listener in Sweden. Well, it turns out this listener and Gord have a connection and we’ll fill you in on this ‘isn’t it a small world’ coincidence. Gord also tells us about his new podcast about a hike in the Lower Great Range of the Adirondack Mountains.
